어떤 묘비의 글


In America, the cemetaries arent far in
the moutains like Korea.
But they are near by town.
The tombstones are lined up in a straight line.
Just like every tombstone,
There are a few chosen sentences written on it.

서양인들의 묘지는 저 멀리 산에 있는 게 아니라
동네 가운데 혹은 교회당 뜰에 있습니다.
거기 가지런히 줄 지어 서 있는 묘비에는
앞서 간 이에 대한 추모의 글이나
아쉬움의 인사가 새겨져 있습니다.

There was a man walking through the lines
of the tombstones reading them.
He continued to do so until he stopped and
looked at a very interesting one.
This particular one had very few things written on it.

There were only three sentences written on
the tombstone and they read:

한 사람이 묘지를 돌며 묘비에 쓰여진 글을 읽다가
어떤 묘 앞에서 발길을 멈추게 되었습니다.
그 묘비의 글이 흥미로웠기 때문입니다.
글은 단 세 줄이었습니다.


" I was standing in front of a tombstone
reading what it said
just like you are right now."

“나도 전에는 당신처럼
그 자리에 그렇게 서 있었소.”

The man chuckled as he read this because
it was a funny thing to be written on a tombstone.
He continued to read on to the next sentence.

순간 웃음이 터졌습니다.
두번째 줄이 이어졌습니다.


"I was also laughing just like you"

“나도 전에는 당신처럼
그 곳에서 그렇게 웃고 있었소.”

As the man read this he thought to
himself that this wasnt a joke and it was
a serious message.
As he thought this he stood up straight and
set his mind in a serious mode.
He continued on to the last sentence
that was written on the tombstone.

이 글을 읽자 그는'이게
그냥 재미로 쓴 것이 아니구나'싶었습니다.
그래서 자세를 가다듬고 긴장된 마음으로
세 번째 줄을 읽었습니다.

"Now please prepare yourself for your
death as i did"

“이제 당신도 나처럼 죽을 준비를 하시오.”

Now as you prepare yourself, live everyday
as if it was your last day to live.
While you are alive live your life to the fullest
extent without wasting your days
by playing around.
You should all prepare this while you
are still breathing and able to.

죽음에 대한 준비만큼
엄숙한 것은 없습니다.
그런데 그 준비는 지금 살아 있는
동안에 해야 합니다.
그 준비는 바로
‘오늘’을 결코 장난처럼 살지 않는 것입니다.
